Fitzgerald said to be responsible for collision off Japan: CNN

July 22, 2017

WASHINGTON- US defense officials have indicated that the USS Fitzgerald is responsible for its collision with a Philippine-registered container vessel off central Japan last month, CNN reported on Friday.
The US Aegis destroyer's crew "did nothing until the last second," an official was quoted as saying. "A slew of things went wrong."
Another official said the accident "will wind up being our (the US Navy's) fault," according to CNN.
"We are in the early stages of the investigation process to develop a comprehensive picture of what caused the collision and do not have any definitive information to release at this time," the Navy said in a statement.
"It is premature to speculate on causation or any other issues," said the statement issued in response to the report, according to the US media giant.
On June 17, the Fitzgerald, which belongs to the Navy's 7th Fleet, collided with the ACX Crystal off the Izu Peninsula in Shizuoka Prefecture.
The collision damaged the Fitzgerald's starboard side and left seven crew members of the Aegis destroyer dead.
The Fitzgerald is currently receiving temporary repairs at the Navy's Yokosuka base in Kanagawa Prefecture, eastern Japan. (Jiji Press)
