Foreign visitors to Japan hit record high in April
May 22, 2019
Tokyo--The estimated number of foreign visitors to Japan in April inched up 0.9 pct from a year before to a monthly record high of 2,926,700, the Japan National Tourism Organization said Tuesday.
The number increased amid the season for cherry blossoms. Easter vacations boosted the number of visitors from Europe and Australia.
Meanwhile, the number of South Korean and Taiwanese visitors to Japan dropped by 11.3 pct and 14.2 pct, respectively.
Many South Koreans and Taiwanese gave up their idea of visiting Japan due to difficulty securing airline seats because the number of Japanese visiting South Korea and Taiwan surged during the 10-day Golden Week holiday period from late April, the organization said. Jiji Press
