Ghosn’s detention extended until April 22
April 12, 2019
Tokyo--Tokyo District Court on Friday approved an eight-day extension of the detention of former Nissan Motor Co. <7201> Chairman Carlos Ghosn until April 22.
Public prosecutors had demanded an extension until April 24. Before the decision, the detention period was set to end on Sunday.
Ghosn's defense team filed a complaint against the court's decision.
Under Japanese rules, the detention period after an arrest can be extended by up to 10 days if a court approves it.
In December last year, the court turned down the prosecution's demand for an extension of his detention after Ghosn was served a second arrest warrant for allegedly violating the financial instruments and exchange law.
This raised the possibility of his release on bail. But he was soon served a third arrest warrant on suspicion of aggravated breach of trust.
He was released on bail last month, but he was rearrested on April 4 on fresh charges of aggravated breach of trust. On the next day, the court approved his detention until Sunday as requested by the prosecution. Jiji Press
