Gov’t adopts extra steps for dairy, other sectors
November 25, 2017
Tokyo- The Japanese government adopted on Friday additional measures to support the domestic dairy and other sectors, after it reached broad free trade accords with the European Union and with the current 10 other member countries of the Trans-Pacific Partnership earlier this year.
The measures are included in a policy package that was revamped from the previous one, formulated after a broad agreement was reached in 2015 on the original 12-member TPP free trade deal, including the United States. The administration of US President Donald Trump withdrew his country from the pact early this year.
The revamped package was approved at a meeting of all cabinet members. The TPP and the Japan-EU economic partnership agreement are "the trump cards of our government's economic growth strategy," Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said at the meeting.
The policy package is "necessary for the trade frameworks to lead to Japan's economic recovery and regional revitalization," he stressed. Jiji Press
