August 22, 2019
Tokyo--Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif is seen visiting Japan as early as the end of August to meet with Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, government sources said Thursday.
The officials are expected to exchange opinions on a U.S. plan to create an international coalition aimed at ensuring maritime security including in the Strait of Hormuz amid a spike in tensions between Washington and Tehran.
Japan is carefully considering whether to join the coalition in view of its long-standing amicable relationship with Iran. Zarif is expected to ask Japan not to participate. Jiji Press
