Japan Aims to Develop Rice That Can Grow in High Temperatures
November 27, 2018
Tokyo--Japan's cabinet adopted a plan on Tuesday to make the country more adaptable to climate change, including support for developing rice varieties than can grow in high temperatures.
The plan lists a set of long-term measures that should be taken by the government to combat global warming toward the end of the 21st century.
Explaining the need to develop rice varieties tolerant to high temperatures, the plan cites an estimate that the production volume of high-quality rice will turn lower after peaking around 2061-2080 if temperatures continue to rise across the country.
The plan also calls for building breakwaters and levees to prevent damage from tidal waves. Jiji Press
