Japan, China Discuss Agriculture Policies
August 30, 2018
Tokyo- Japan and China discussed agricultural policies at a subcabinet-level meeting in Tokyo on Thursday, the first such talks in two and a half years.
The meeting was attended by Hiroyuki Suematsu, Japanese vice agriculture minister, and his Chinese counterpart, Qu Dongyu.
"We hope that the dialogue will lead to the further development of the agriculture industry in both countries," Suematsu said at the start of the meeting.
Qu said China has much to learn from Japan, which has vast experience in agricultural modernization and in tackling an aging population.
Tokyo has asked Beijing to ease its import restrictions on farm products and foods from Fukushima and nine other Japanese prefectures that were introduced following the March 2011 triple meltdown at Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings Inc.'s <9501> disaster-stricken Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant.
