September 3, 2017
GENKAI, SAGA PREF.- The Japanese government began a two-day comprehensive disaster drill assuming that a serious accident has happened at Kyushu Electric Power Co.'s Genkai nuclear power station.
The drill is participated by some 6,500 people, including officials of the Cabinet Office, the Nuclear Regulation Authority and relevant local governments, as well as residents around the power plant.
The plant in the town of Genkai, Saga Prefecture, southwestern Japan, is currently offline. The No. 3 and No. 4 reactors at the plant have effectively passed the NRA's safety checks under the country's new safety standards introduced in July 2013, after the triple reactor meltdown at Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings Inc.'s Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power station, which sustained heavy damage from the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami.
