October 24, 2018

Tokyo- The Japanese government is considering increasing the number of foreigners it accepts under a refugee resettlement program, which allows those fleeing a nation to settle in a third country.

Justice Minister Takashi Yamashita revealed the plan at a press conference on Tuesday.

On Monday, the government set up a relevant panel of officials from ministries and agencies, and experts.

Japan now accepts Myanmarese refugees in Malaysia. The annual number of people accepted by Japan under the program stands at around 30 at present.

Japan started the resettlement program in fiscal 2010. As of the end of last month, the country had accepted a total of 174 Myanmarese refugees, from 44 families. Jiji Press
