Japan Minister Calls for Int’l Actions at COP24

Katowice, Poland--Japanese Environment Minister Yoshiaki Harada on Tuesday called on the international society to work expeditiously on attaining goals set out in the 2015 Paris agreement on the fight against global warming.

Nations need to take actions immediately to achieve the Paris agreement goals, he said, seeking joint efforts to deal with the important challenge.

Harada made the remarks at the Talanoa dialogue during a ministerial session at the ongoing 24th Conference of the Parties to the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change, or COP24, in Katowice, southern Poland.

The launch of the Talanoa dialogue was decided at last year's COP23 meeting.During the dialogue, nations will report progress in their efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and how to achieve their emissions reduction goals.

Harada explained his country's efforts, including a case in which floating offshore wind power facilities in the city of Goto, Nagasaki Prefecture, southwestern Japan, are serving like a reef and attracting fish. He also noted that Japan has introduced high-efficiency transformers to Vietnam to support the nation's environmental efforts.
