Japan, Philippines Team Up on New Resident Status

March 20, 2019

Tokyo- The Japanese and Philippine governments have signed a memorandum of cooperation regarding new types of resident status to be introduced in Japan in April.

The two countries will work together to eradicate malicious brokers as well as illicit acts in related technical and language tests.

The memorandum, signed on Tuesday, stipulates that a joint committee consisted of ministry officials of the two countries should share information and work on properly operating the new resident status system in Japan.

It notes that the Japanese government should publicize the sending organizations that have been authorized by the Philippine government.

Also included in the memorandum is a commitment to pay workers from the Philippines rewards equivalent to Japanese workers or more.

Japan, faced with serious labor shortages, is set to accept more workers from abroad by introducing the new types of resident status for those with certain professional skills.

The Japanese government plans to sign a memorandum of cooperation with each of the nine Asian countries where related Japanese language proficiency tests will be conducted.

It expects to sign such a memorandum shortly with Cambodia, Nepal and Myanmar, respectively, and hopes to speed up negotiations with the remaining five countries, including China.Jiji Press
