Japan seeks new era of ties with China

October 1, 2019

Tokyo--Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga expressed Tuesday the Japanese government's hope for a "new era" of relations with China on the 70th anniversary of the country's founding.

"Ahead of the state visit to Japan by President Xi Jinping next spring, we would like to appropriately deal with concerns by conducting high-level exchanges and elevate Japan-China relations to a new level, to build a new era of Japan and China," Suga said at a news conference.

At a separate news conference, Defense Minister Taro Kono noted the fact that China held its largest ever military parade for the occasion. "China is called on to ensure transparency in, for example, how the unpublished parts of its defense budget are used," Kono said. Jiji Press
