Japan Shows Understanding of Cancellation of U.S.-S. Korea Drills

June 19, 2018

Tokyo- Japanese Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera on Tuesday showed a certain level of understanding toward the cancellation of U.S.-South Korea joint military exercises scheduled for August.

The decision was apparently made "from the perspective of how defense authorities should support diplomatic efforts," Onodera told a press conference.

Japan will continue working closely with the United States and South Korea based on the recognition that U.S.-South Korea joint military drills are an important pillar in securing peace and stability in the region, he said.

Joint exercises between Japan and the United States and between Japan, the United States and South Korea will take place as usual, he said.

At a separate press conference, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said the United States remains committed to defending allies and that Tokyo understands that the presence of U.S. forces in Japan will not change.

Speaking at a separate press conference, Foreign Minister Taro Kono said he understands that the United States and South Korea will resume joint military exercises if North Korea fails to engage in talks in good faith. Jiji Press
