Japan to Hold 77 Events to Mark Emperor’s 30th Anniversary

Tokyo--The Japanese government said Tuesday that it will hold 77 events to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Emperor Akihito's accession to the throne next year.

The plan was presented at the second meeting of a committee for ceremonies linked to the Imperial succession, chaired by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

The series of events to mark the 30th anniversary of the Emperor's enthronement will be conducted by 16 government ministries and agencies, including the Cabinet Office.

The Imperial Household Agency will hold a special exhibition to mark the Emperor's 30 years on the throne and the 60th anniversary of the marriage of the Emperor and Empress Michiko in January-April at the Museum of the Imperial Collections within the Imperial Palace.

In February, the Imperial couple will hold a tea ceremony at the Imperial Palace. Another tea ceremony will also be hosted by the couple at the Kyoto Imperial Palace.

A book and a DVD on their activities will be produced.

At the Tokyo National Museum, an enthronement anniversary exhibition will take place in March and April in cooperation with the Imperial Household Agency.

For the 10th anniversary of the Emperor's accession to the throne, 58 similar events were held in 1999, and 74 took place for the 20th anniversary in 2009. Jiji Press
