Japan to Host 2019 Meeting of U.N. Climate Panel in Kyoto

July 13, 2018

Tokyo- The 49th general session of the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, slated for May 2019, will be held in the western Japan city of Kyoto, Japanese Environment Minister Masaharu Nakagawa announced Friday.

This will be the second time for Japan to host an IPCC general meeting, after the 38th session held in the city of Yokohama, south of Tokyo, in 2014.

The eight-day meeting will discuss the methods to calculate greenhouse gas emissions, needed to enhance the effectiveness of the Paris Agreement, an international framework worked out in 2015 to combat climate change.

"I hope that the meeting will stimulate renewed public interest in climate change issues," Nakagawa said.

The IPCC, established in 1988 by the U.N. Environmental Program and the World Meteorological Organization, provides policymakers with scientific, technological and socioeconomic assessments on global warming. Jiji Press
