Japan, U.S. Vow to Pursue N. Korea Denuclearization

August 26, 2018

Tokyo- Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono and U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Friday agreed that their countries will continue to work closely together toward North Korea's denuclearization.

The agreement was reached during their phone talks after Pompeo canceled his planned trip to North Korea, according to the Japanese Foreign Ministry.

Pompeo notified Kono of the cancellation. In response, the Japanese minister, who is currently on a trip to the United States, expressed gratitude to Pompeo for communicating with him quickly.

U.S. President Donald Trump tweeted Friday that he has asked Pompeo "not to go to North Korea, at this time, because I feel we are not making sufficient progress with respect to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula." Jiji Press
