Japan, UK agree to lead efforts to ensure rule of law
July 21, 2017
TOKYO- Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida and his British counterpart, Boris Johnson, agreed at their strategic dialogue in Tokyo Friday that their countries will exercise leadership to realize basic values such as the rule of law.
They discussed the increasingly severe security situation in East Asia, including North Korea's nuclear and missile development and China's maritime assertiveness.
In a joint press conference after the meeting, Johnson stressed the need to increase pressure on North Korea while noting that China should exercise its influence over the reclusive state in order to bring it back to the negotiating table.
In the strategic dialogue, Kishida reiterated Japan's request for Britain to prevent Japanese companies from being negatively affected by its planned exit from the European Union. Johnson agreed to give this due consideration. (Jiji Press)
