Japanese anime film “Mirai” wins Annie Award

Los Angeles--Japanese animated film "Mirai no Mirai" (Mirai) by director Mamoru Hosoda won the best animated independent feature prize in the 46th annual Annie Awards on Saturday.

The film is about a mysterious adventure that a four-year-old boy goes through with a teenager girl, his younger sister who has time traveled from the future.

During the prize-giving ceremony, Hosoda said he created the film, thinking how wonderful it is to spend time together with little children. The main character is modeled after his own children.

The U.S. awards, organized by the International Animated Film Society, ASIFA-Hollywood, are considered the anime industry's version of the Academy Awards.

"Mirai no Mirai" has gained an Oscar nomination for the best animated feature film, as has "Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse," which won the best animated feature category in this year's Annie Awards.
