Japanese man detained amid Hong Kong protests: Suga

Tokyo--Hong Kong authorities have taken a Japanese man in his 20s into custody amid prodemocracy protests in the former British colony, Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said Tuesday.

"We hear he is in good health condition with no injury," Suga told a press conference. The top government spokesman declined to disclose the man's name or the reason for his detention.

Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi, at a separate news conference, said the man is not a student attending school in Hong Kong but a tourist.

The man was held on Sunday near Hong Kong Polytechnic University in the Kowloon district, where the clash between protesters and police is continuing.

While in detention, he was visited by officials from the Japanese consulate-general in Hong Kong on Monday. Jiji Press
