November 28, 2018
London--Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe welcomed the progress made on Britain's exit from the European Union, in telephone talks with his British counterpart, Theresa May, Tuesday, the British government said.
The talks were held after EU leaders approved Sunday an agreement on Britain's withdrawal from the EU, or Brexit.
May welcomed Abe's plan to visit Britain early next year, the British government also said.
Abe considered making such a visit early next month but postponed it due to the parliamentary schedule, informed sources said.
Also in their talks, Abe and May discussed the importance of free trade and close cooperation between their countries.
They are believed to have exchanged views on the Trans-Pacific Partnership free trade agreement among Japan and 10 other countries. Britain has shown its interest in joining the TPP. Jiji Press
