September 24, 2018
New York- Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono was the only man in a photo session held Friday as part of a two-day meeting of female foreign ministers from around the world that started in Montreal, eastern Canada, the same day.
Kono took part in some of first-day events of the Women Foreign Ministers' Meeting, co-hosted by the Canadian government and the European Union.
The photo session in question was attended by a total of 16 people. Kono found himself at the center of the front row, also made up of eight women, with the other seven female participants standing in the back row.
The two-day meeting focuses on facilitating women's participation in politics and eradicating gender-based violence.
Kono attended the meeting to highlight the positive stance of the administration of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in promoting measures to empower women.
While the administration aims to create a society where all women can shine, the Abe cabinet has only two female ministers at present. Jiji Press
