JR East Seeks Ideas for Name of New Yamanote Line Station

June 6, 2018

Tokyo- -East Japan Railway Co., or JR East, started on Tuesday to solicit ideas from the public for the name of a planned new station on its Yamanote Line in central Tokyo.

The new station, to be located between Tamachi and Shinagawa stations, is now being constructed. It will be the 30th station on the busy loop line.

JR East will accept ideas until the end of this month. A relevant committee of the railway operator will decide the name of the new station based on the input, and it will be announced in winter this year, JR East officials said.

The new station is scheduled to tentatively open in spring 2020, shortly before the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics in the year. It will fully go into service in 2024, with the openings of a hotel and commercial facilities.

It will be the first station to be launched on the Yamanote Line in nearly half a century since Nishi-Nippori Station opened in April 1971.

"The new station will serve as a pivot in a new community," JR East President Yuji Fukasawa told a press conference in Tokyo on Tuesday. "We hope to receive a lot of ideas for the name of the station."

Entries will be accepted via JR East's website or by postcard. Jiji Press
