Koike announces intention to proceed with market relocation
June 21, 2017
Tokyo- Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike on Tuesday announced her intention to carry out the planned relocation of the Japanese capital's landmark Tsukiji wholesale food market in Chuo Ward to the Toyosu district in neighboring Koto Ward, some 10 months after she shelved the plan due partly to safety concerns at Toyosu.
Koike stopped short of specifying when the market relocation, initially slated for November 2016, will be conducted.
Also at a hastily called press conference at the metropolitan government building, the governor revealed a plan to redevelop the Tsukiji site as a "food theme park" over the next five years, with some of its market functions to be retained.
The Tsukiji site will be used as a transport base during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, according to the governor. (Jiji Press)
