Nagasaki- Meeting with U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in Nagasaki Thursday, Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono called for Guterres' initiative in reforming the U.N. Security Council.
"There is a pressing need to overhaul the Security Council," Kono told the U.N. chief, who is visiting Nagasaki to attend a ceremony the same day to mark the 73rd anniversary of the atomic bombing of the southwestern Japan city.
Also at the meeting, Kono hailed Guterres' disarmament agenda announced in May, saying it "can heighten the momentum toward disarmament and nonproliferation."
The agenda focuses on not only weapons but new battlefield technologies.
On denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, they underscored the importance of keeping fully implementing Security Council sanctions resolutions against North Korea. Jiji Press
