LDP broadly OKs constitutional revision proposals on education
February 21, 2018
Tokyo- A panel of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party reached a broad consensus on Wednesday on the party leadership's proposals for constitutional revisions designed to beef up education.
The proposals call for adding a paragraph to Article 26 of the country's constitution to clarify the obligation of the state to make efforts to improve the educational environment. The article stipulates the right to receive an equal education.
The broad consensus was reached at a meeting of the LDP's Headquarters for the Promotion of Revision to the Constitution.
The proposals did not mention the need to introduce free education for funding concerns even after the party pushed for the measure as one of its campaign promises for last year's general election.
Instead, the party will seek to add a sentence to the article to ensure that all people are not robbed of an opportunity to receive education for financial reasons. Jiji Press
