August 5, 2018
Hiroshima- A memorial ceremony was held Sunday in Hiroshima for South Korean people who died in the U.S. atomic bombing of the western Japan city in August 1945.
In an address, the chief of the Hiroshima branch of the pro-Seoul Korean Residents Union in Japan, or Mindan, said, "We remember the mortification of hibakusha who were force to lead tough lives due to exposure to radiation."
"We'll convey the value of peace to the next generation so the tragedy will never happen again," the branch head said.
Ahead of the 73rd anniversary of the nuclear attack on Hiroshima on Monday, the ceremony, the 49th of its kind, was attended by about 300 people, including family members of the victims. A list of 2,746 South Korean victims, including 12 who died in the past year, was dedicated to a cenotaph for the bombing victims.
South Korea's consul-general in Hiroshima noted that efforts are under way to get rid of nuclear weapons and remove the dangers of war on the Korean Peninsula, and prayed for help in reuniting the divided peoples on the peninsula. Jiji Press
