Mnuchin, Aso to hold talks at G-20 finance meeting
June 5, 2019
Washington--U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Japanese Finance Minister Taro Aso will hold talks on the sidelines of an upcoming Group of 20 meeting in Japan, the U.S. Treasury Department said Tuesday.
The G-20 finance ministers and central bank chiefs will gather on Saturday and Sunday in the southwestern Japan city of Fukuoka.
Mnuchin and Aso may exchange opinions on a currency clause to ban currency devaluation aimed at increasing exports that could be included in a proposed bilateral trade agreement, informed sources said.
Mnuchin is also scheduled to meet with People's Bank of China Governor Yi Gang.
The U.S. government is poised to urge China to take necessary steps, out of concern that a weak yuan is giving a boost to China's exports to the United States.
Mnuchin and Yi are likely to discuss the currency issue as part of the two counties' trade talks, which broke down last month, the sources said. Jiji Press
