Morinaga Milk Customer Data Leaked due to Hacking
June 5, 2018
Tokyo- Morinaga Milk Industry Co. said Monday that personal data on up to 92,822 customers may have been stolen as its health food shopping website was hacked.
Announcing the results of an external investigation of the unauthorized access case, the major Japanese dairy products maker said that credit card information belonging to up to 29,773 of the affected customers was leaked and that around 300 cases of illicit use of the information, involving some 20 million yen, have been confirmed so far.
Morinaga will pay compensation to those whose credit card information was abused.
The company announced on May 9 that personal data on up to 120,000 customers may have been stolen.
Leaked were the names, addresses and other data on customers who made product orders on the website using payment methods such as remittances and cash on delivery between Jan. 22, 2012, on which the site was opened, and Oct. 16, 2017, when the old server computer was closed.
Customers who ordered items by credit card on Jan. 7, 2015 or later, had the card numbers, the names on the card and the expiration dates leaked, and some of the data were possibly abused, according to the company.
The investigation confirmed no leaks of security codes, Morinaga said.
While apologizing to affected customers by email and letters, Morinaga is considering filing a damage report with police. Jiji Press
