Nagasaki to make Kazuo Ishiguro honorary citizen
February 15, 2018
Nagasaki- Nagasaki Mayor Tomihisa Taue announced Wednesday a decision to make Nagasaki-born British author Kazuo Ishiguro, the winner of the 2017 Nobel Prize in Literature, an honorary citizen of the southwestern Japan city.
A bill for the move will be submitted to a regular session of the Nagasaki city assembly from Feb. 21.
Ishiguro, 63, lived in Nagasaki until the age of 5 before emigrating to Britain in 1960.
His debut novel, "A Pale View of Hills," is set in Nagasaki after the U.S. atomic bombing of the city during World War II.
Ishiguro's remarks on Nagasaki after winning the Nobel Prize and strong hopes for peace have impressed Nagasaki residents, Taue said, expressing his wish to invite the author to his hometown to interact with young people. Jiji Press
