Narita airport to introduce body scanners
March 29, 2017
NARITA,CHIBA PREF.- Narita International Airport near Tokyo is set to introduce on Wednesday advanced body scanners designed to detect suspicious items using electromagnetic radiation.
The introduction of the body scanners for passengers using international flights is aimed at strengthening safety inspections going into the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics.
The scanners can identify explosives made of nonmetal materials that metal detectors cannot detect.
A total of 10 such body scanners will be set up at the airport’s three passenger terminals.
In Tuesday’s demonstration event at the airport, a man playing the role of a passenger turned around with his both hands raised in front of a body scanner.
A circular mark was shown on a monitor connected to the body scanner when no belongings were detected, while the monitor indicated the position of a suspicious item when it was identified.
Tokyo International Airport at Haneda is also scheduled to introduce body scanners on Wednesday. Jiji Press
