Narita Airport to Open Temporary Terminal for 2020 Tokyo Games
June 29, 2018
Narita, Chiba Pref.- The operator of Narita International Airport announced on Thursday a 33.7-billion-yen project to cope with a huge crowd of people likely to use the airport during the Tokyo Olympic-Paralympic period in 2020.
As part of the project, a temporary terminal will open at the airport near Tokyo for three days from Aug. 10, 2020, the day after the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games, Narita International Airport Corp. President Makoto Natsume told a press conference.
Departures of athletes, Olympic-related officials and visitors from abroad are expected to peak that day, according to Natsume.
The operator plans to spend 2.95 billion yen to get the airport in Narita, Chiba Prefecture, ready to handle 72,000 departures per day, some 1.3 times the airport's record departure figure, during the three-day period.
For the temporary terminal, check-in and immigration counters, a baggage collection area and other facilities will be set up in unused space at an existing terminal, Natsume said, adding all existing terminals will be fully utilized to handle the anticipated crowds.
The project also calls for investment worth 13 billion yen for making the airport more accessible, 11 billion yen for full bathroom refurbishments and easing traffic congestion, and 6.75 billion yen for strengthening security checks.
"We'll fulfill our responsibility as Japan's front entrance," Natsume said. Jiji Press
