New body eyed for cybersecurity
July 13, 2017
TOKYO- The Japanese government plans to establish a public-private organization to deal with cyberattacks ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The plan was included in an interim report compiled Thursday by the Cyber Security Strategy Headquarters as a basis for the government's work to draw up its next cybersecurity strategy, which will succeed the current one slated to expire in September 2018.
The new organization will also be in operation during the 2019 Rugby World Cup, to be held in Japan.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga, who heads the headquarters comprising cabinet members and experts, indicated at its meeting Thursday that some of the measures included in the interim report will be implemented before the compilation of the next cybersecurity strategy.
The planned new organization will be established under the National Center of Incident Readiness and Strategy for Cybersecurity, or NISC, at the Cabinet Secretariat, according to the interim report.
Private-sector members of the organization will include representatives from the electricity, gas, railway and aviation industries, all of which are designated as important infrastructure by the government in its efforts to prevent cyberattacks.
During the Olympics and Paralympics, the organization will cooperate around the clock with another government body in charge of collecting and providing terrorism-related information. (Jiji Press)
