Ochanomizu University to Accept Transgender Students
July 3, 2018
Tokyo- Ochanomizu University, a women's university in Tokyo, said Monday that it will start accepting transgender students from the fiscal year beginning April 2020.
Kimiko Murofushi, president of the university, will hold a press conference shortly to explain why the university has decided to accept students who are men under Japan's family registration system but recognize their gender as women.
According to the education ministry, it is rare for a women's university in Japan to accept transgender students.
Ochanomizu University's decision may affect policies of other women's universities, sources familiar with the situation said.
