Naha, Okinawa Pref.--Okinawa Governor Denny Tamaki will visit the United States for six days from Sunday, the prefectural government said Monday.

Tamaki plans to give a lecture in New York. Meetings with U.S. government officials and lawmakers in Washington are being arranged.

In a statement on the trip, Tamaki said he will explain that he won the gubernatorial election last month by pledging not to allow the construction of a new military facility in the Henoko coastal district in Nago, Okinawa, for the relocation of the U.S. Marine Corps' Futenma air base in Ginowan, another city in the southernmost prefecture.

He will also set out the burden on Okinawa, which hosts the bulk of U.S. military bases in Japan, according to the statement.

"I want to call for understanding and cooperation through dialogue toward the resolution of the issue of U.S. bases in Okinawa," he said. Jiji Press
