Olympus Shuts Digital Camera Plant in China
May 8, 2018
Tokyo- Japan's Olympus Corp. said Monday that it closed a digital camera plant in Shenzhen in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong the same day.
The withdrawal from digital camera production in China reflects the shrinking market for the products due to the spread of smartphones, as well as the aging of factory equipment.
Olympus will consolidate its production of digital cameras and related products to a factory in Vietnam.
The Shenzhen plant started operations in 1994. In recent years, it mainly manufactured interchangeable camera lenses.
Olympus will terminate the work contracts with some 1,800 employees at the factory.
In China, the company manufactures microscopes at a plant in Guangzhou, also in Guangdong Province. Jiji Press
