Onodera, Mattis Agree to Keep Up Pressure on N. Korea
May 30, 2018
Tokyo- Japanese Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera and U.S. Defense Secretary James Mattis have agreed to keep up pressure on North Korea to scrap its weapons of mass destruction and all types of ballistic missiles, the Defense Ministry said Wednesday.
The defense chiefs reached the agreement at a meeting in Hawaii on Tuesday, amid efforts by Washington and Pyongyang to salvage the June 12 summit between their leaders, Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un.
Onodera told Mattis that the Trump-Kim summit should be an opportunity to make progress to resolve the issues of North Korea's nuclear and missile development, as well as its past abductions of Japanese citizens.
The defense chiefs confirmed that their countries will continue cooperating to block North Korea's attempts to evade international sanctions, such as smuggling by sea.
They also agreed on the importance of the deterrent power of U.S. forces in South Korea and elsewhere. Jiji Press
