Tokyo- The first Group of 20 summit to be chaired by Japan will take place in 2019 in Osaka, western Japan, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga announced Wednesday.
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has made the final decision on the venue, Suga told a press conference.
"Osaka's experience as a host of an APEC summit was taken into account, as well as its accommodation capacity and security circumstances," the top government spokesman said. The 1995 summit of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum took place in Osaka.
Meanwhile, a meeting of finance ministers and central bank governors from the G-20 advanced and emerging economies will be hosted by Fukuoka in the Kyushu southwestern region, Suga also said.
Specific dates for the two G-20 events are yet to be fixed, he added. The government plans to set the summit for late June to early July.
The venues for other G-20 ministerial meetings will be decided "at a proper time," Suga said. "We'll basically look at those bidding to host the meetings on a priority basis." Jiji Press
