Tokyo- A Japanese government-appointed panel plans to propose measures to realize so-called digital stadiums where audience can enjoy 4K ultrahigh-definition videos on their smartphones, Jiji Press has learned.
The project, aimed at using stadiums to promote interaction of local people, is part of a government initiative of making active use of information and communications technologies for sports in the run-up to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics.
The proposal is included in a report drawn up by the panel of experts at the Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry. A copy of the report was made available to Jiji Press.
In the report, the panel also plans to highlight a need for developing the environment to help active use of various data for such purposes as health promotion.
The report was produced by a subcommittee of the panel set up by the communications minister with the aim of creating new businesses and revitalizing regional economies. It will be submitted to a meeting of panel executives on Monday.
Regarding the idea of creating digital stadiums, the panel will underscore the need to promote public-private collaboration for the development of high speed Wi-Fi connection to enable tens of thousands of people at a stadium to download 4K images into their smartphones or other devices at the same time.
