April 15, 2018
Mashiki, Kumamoto Pref.- A total of 261 people on Sunday prayed for victims of a series of strong earthquakes that struck the town of Mashiki in the southwestern Japan prefecture of Kumamoto two years ago.
These people, including 63 bereaved family members, offered a moment of silence for the victims at a memorial ceremony hosted by the town government.
The quakes that hit the town in April 2016 included two temblors that both measured the maximum seismic intensity of 7 on the Japanese scale.
In a speech at the ceremony, Mashiki Mayor Hironori Nishimura said, "I'll work with people in the town to make it full of smiles as early as possible." Jiji Press
