Recovery Efforts Continue in Japan after Rain Disaster

Tokyo- Recovery efforts continued on Monday, the last day of the three-day weekend, in areas mainly in western Japan heavily damaged by the recent flooding and mudslides caused by torrential rain.
Personnel from the Self-Defense Forces, police and fire departments were searching for 20 people listed as missing in four prefectures. In the disaster, the death toll has reached 210 in 13 prefectures.
According to the Japan National Council of Social Welfare, the total number of volunteer workers who gathered in disaster areas in the three-day weekend may reach 40,000.
Braving scorching heat, volunteer workers removed dirt and debris from homes and roads.
According to the Fire and Disaster Management Agency, about 4,870 people were taking refuge at shelters as of 8 p.m. on Sunday (11 a.m. GMT). Jiji Press
