Royal Couple Attends Event for Japan Immigration to Hawaii

Honolulu- Visiting Japanese Prince Akishino and his wife, Princess Kiko, attended a ceremony celebrating the 150th anniversary of Japanese immigration to Hawaii, in Honolulu on Thursday.
"Japanese-Americans in Hawaii can take real pride in their outstanding service in helping to build the thriving community here, especially in overcoming hardships during the Second World War," Prince Akishino said in English.
The prince, the second son of Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko, and the princess are on an official trip to the U.S. island state.
Around 150 Japanese people moved to Hawaii in 1868, becoming pioneer Japanese immigrants settling in foreign countries.
The event, attended by some 280 people including those of Japanese descent, showcased performances including a hula dance by descendants of the 1868 Japanese immigrants. Jiji Press
