Satellite Imagery Shows Possible Work at N. Korean N-Reactor

August 10, 2018

Washington- Recent satellite imagery shows North Korea's possible "ongoing work" at a graphite-moderated reactor in the Yongbyon nuclear complex in the country's northwest, the 38 North website said Thursday.

The imagery, captured on July 31, "indicates ongoing work on the secondary cooling system" of the reactor, the U.S. website said, giving the analysis based on its observation of a discharge from the system.

However, the 5,000-kilowatt reactor "is most likely not operating," according to 38 North.

Activity around a facility to reprocess spent nuclear fuel "remains at low levels," and there "are no observable signs" that its experimental light water reactor has started operations, the website said. Jiji Press
