Sept.-Oct. 2018 eyed for Tsukiji Market relocation
October 17, 2017
TOKYO- The Tokyo metropolitan government proposed Monday that the planned relocation of the Tsukiji wholesale food market in the Japanese capital's Chuo Ward to the new Toyosu site in neighboring Koto Ward be carried out in September-October next year.
The overture was shown to a relevant industry organization.
The metropolitan government hopes to obtain the industry's consent at the end of this month by holding a meeting of a council comprising officials from both sides, sources familiar with the situation said.
In June this year, Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike unveiled a basic plan to relocate the functions of the aging Tsukiji market to the Toyosu site between early June next and autumn 2018, while redeveloping the Tsukiji site.
The plan called for the launch of work to demolish the Tsukiji facilities in October 2018 at the latest and the construction of a beltway connecting Tokyo's city center with the athletes' village for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, as well as a transportation hub for the events. Jiji Press
