April 3, 2018
Tokyo- The Bank of Japan said Monday that it has appointed Tokiko Shimizu as head of its Nagoya branch, making her the first woman to reach a department chief or higher post at the central bank.
Shimizu, 53, succeeded Shinichi Uchida, who was promoted to be BOJ executive director in charge of international affairs, as the manager of the BOJ branch in the capital of Aichi Prefecture, central Japan, on Sunday.
Shimizu joined the BOJ in 1987. After serving in posts such as chief of the Takamatsu branch in the western prefecture of Kagawa, as well as deputy director-general of the International Department, she became the general manager for Europe in July 2016.
The Nagoya branch manager post is usually held by former chiefs of major departments at the Tokyo head office, such as the monetary affairs and financial system departments, but Shimizu's appointment is an exception. Jiji Press
