Strong quake jolts Japan’s Miyazaki Prefecture

Tokyo--A strong earthquake with an estimated magnitude of 6.3 rocked Miyazaki Prefecture, southwestern Japan, on Friday.
The quake, which hit at 8:48 a.m. (11:48 p.m. Thursday GMT), measured lower 5 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of zero to 7 in the cities of Miyazaki and Miyakonojo.
The Japan Meteorological Agency traced the focus of the quake to about 20 kilometers underground in the Hyuga-nada sea off Miyazaki Prefecture. Some changes in tidal levels may be observed, but no tsunami damage is expected, it said.
No abnormality has been reported at Kyushu Electric Power Co.'s <9508> Sendai nuclear power plant in Kagoshima Prefecture, southwestern Japan, and Shikoku Electric Power Co.'s <9507> Ikata nuclear power plant in Ehime Prefecture, western Japan. Jiji Press
