Tokyo court oks Ghosn’s detention until April 14
April 5, 2019
Tokyo--Tokyo District Court approved on Friday the detention until April 14 of former Nissan Motor Co. <7201> Chairman Carlos Ghosn, who has been arrested again on additional aggravated breach of trust charges.
The defense team for Ghosn plans to appeal the court decision.
On Thursday, Ghosn, while on bail, was arrested for the fourth time, for allegedly funneling funds of the Japanese automaker to a dealer in Oman, in violation of the companies law.
The same day, Junichiro Hironaka, a lawyer for Ghosn, criticized the latest move by the special investigation squad of the Tokyo District Public Prosecutors Office as "an outrageous act that shouldn't be allowed."
In Japan, a detention period after arrest can be extended by up to 10 days with a court's approval.
Tokyo District Court had previously turned down prosecutors' request to keep Ghosn in detention, after Ghosn had been served a arrest warrant for the second time in December last year for allegedly underreporting his remuneration from Nissan in the company's financial statement in violation of the Financial Instruments and Exchange Act.
The following day, the special investigation squad served a new arrest warrant on Ghosn for allegedly transferring private losses to the Japanese automaker in violation of the companies law.
Ghosn was released on bail on March 6, more than 100 days after his first arrest in November. Jiji Press
