Tokyo governor election set for July 5, 2020
November 13, 2019
Tokyo--The Tokyo metropolitan government's election commission Wednesday set the next gubernatorial election for July 5 next year, about three weeks before the opening of the year's Tokyo Olympics.
The poll was set for the furthest Sunday possible under law from the July 24 opening of the Tokyo Games, in order to minimize the impact of the election on the quadrennial sports event.
Candidacy applications will be accepted June 18, marking the start of the official campaign period.
The term of current Governor Yuriko Koike is set to end July 30. The public offices election law stipulates that a gubernatorial election be held within 30 days before the expiration of the incumbent's term. Jiji Press
