Tokyo gov’t calls for support to make recycled Olympic medals
May 3, 2018
Tokyo- The Tokyo metropolitan government called for greater cooperation from citizens Wednesday for its project to collect old mobile phones and other unwanted electric devices to produce recycled medals for the 2020 Olympics and Paralympics in the Japanese capital.
Speaking at an event held to promote the collection, Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike asked people to check for any outdated electric devices at home.
The project was launched in April 2017 to make 5,000 gold, silver and bronze medals using materials recycled from unwanted devices collected through local governments. Devices equivalent to about 20 million mobile phones are needed to be collected.
The event was held to celebrate the collection of more than 100,000 units of such outdated devices by the metropolitan government.
"We want to promote the project to make the games memorable for people," Koike said. Jiji Press
