Tokyo Medical Univ. Rejects 55 Women Despite Passing Scores

Tokyo- Tokyo Medical University disqualified a total of 55 female applicants for admission in 2016 and 2017 although their test scores were above passing marks, a third-party panel has reported.

According to the panel's initial report, released on Tuesday night, there were several cases of problematic practices such as score manipulation for certain applicants, also including men, who took examinations for the medical division conducted by the university itself or the National Center Test for University Admissions.

In addition, women were treated unfairly in exams on students recommended by their high schools' principals.

The report also pointed out that the former university president and others instructed staff officials to bump up scores of some applicants to have them pass the exams.

From now, the panel plans to conduct investigations into not only entrance exams for the medical school held in 2013-16 but tests for the school of nursing in 2013-18. The investigation results are scheduled to be reported by the end of the year.

In August, an internal inquiry committee report said the university started manipulating test scores mainly of female applicants no later than 2006. Jiji Press
