Tokyo Olympics men’s soccer final to move to Yokohama
March 4, 2018
Tokyo- The organizing committee of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics plans to move the venue of the men's soccer final at the Olympics from Tokyo to Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture, informed sources said Sunday.
The committee plans to hold the soccer final, scheduled for Aug. 8, 2020, at Yokohama's Nissan Stadium instead of the new National Stadium in Tokyo as initially planned, the sources said.
The new plan was submitted to the International Olympic Committee last month, the sources said.
The organizing committee found it necessary to move the venue of the soccer final because required layout changes for events scheduled to take place at the National Stadium the following day take time, the sources said.
The under-construction National Stadium, the games' main venue, is scheduled to stage the men's marathon and the Olympic closing ceremony on Aug. 9, 2020.
The organizing committee hopes that the IOC Executive Board will approve the venue change for the men's soccer final when it meets in July this year. But FIFA, soccer's world governing body, has expressed concerns about the Olympics' competition schedule.
The organizing committee plans to hold the women's soccer final, set for Aug. 7, 2020, at the National Stadium. Jiji Press
